Former Project Runway Contestant Dies After Gunman Opens Fire at ‘No Kings’ Protest: ‘Innocent Bystander’

A man who was critically injured in a shooting incident at a demonstration in Utah has died, police have announced.

Fashion designer Arthur Folasa Ah Loo, 39, was shot and critically wounded during the protest in Salt Lake City on Saturday, June 14. He later died in the hospital from his injuries, the Salt Lake City Police Department confirmed in a news release.

“The incident began at approximately 7:56 p.m. when a sergeant assigned to the SLCPD Motor Squad reported hearing gunfire near 151 South State Street,” the SLCPD stated. “Officers quickly moved in to secure the scene and search for any active threats [and] found a man who had been shot and immediately began life-saving efforts.”

The shooting reportedly occurred during a “No Kings” protest against President Donald Trump’s administration in Salt Lake City, per CBS News.

Ah Loo received emergency care from SLCPD SWAT team members, the Salt Lake City Fire Department and Gold Cross Ambulance, the release confirmed.  “Despite those efforts, the man died at the hospital,” police added.

According to authorities, Ah Loo was an “innocent bystander” participating in the demonstration and “was not the intended target of the gunfire.” His cause of death is being determined by the Utah Office of the Medical Examiner.

At around 8:00 p.m., officers and detectives were “flagged down near 102 South 200 East.” There, they found suspect Arturo Gamboa, 24, armed and dressed in black with a black mask “crouching among a group of people with a gunshot wound” and he was transported to the hospital, per the release.

Two men, identified as peacekeeping team members at the protest, at the scene reported to detectives seeing “suspicious” behavior from Gamboa before the shooting, claiming that they “saw Gamboa move away from the crowd and into a secluded area behind a wall,” and “pull out an AR-15-style rifle from a backpack,” per the release.

The peacekeepers then “drew their firearms and ordered Gamboa to drop the weapon.” Gamboa allegedly then “ran towards the crowd gathered on State Street, holding the weapon in a firing position” as the peacekeepers fired three rounds, one of which struck Gamboa and one which fatally wounded Ah Loo.
