Why did Charity stab Mackenzie in Emmerdale as soap revisits dark storyline

Charity Dingle and Mackenzie Boyd have been through more than most couples could reasonably expect to survive in Emmerdale, but one of their darkest chapters came in 2024 when Charity stabbed her husband during a terrifying episode.

The shocking incident was the culmination of weeks of trauma for Charity, who had been struggling to cope after accidentally killing gangster Damon “Harry” Harris. With Charity now facing another traumatic death following Dr Caitlin Todd’s demise, the storyling has brought some uncomfortable memories back to the surface.

In this Friday’s (14 August) Emmerdale episode, Mack reminded Charity of what happened when her mental health deteriorated in 2024. But why did Charity stab Mackenzie in the first place and what happened afterwards?

Who was Harry and why did Charity kill him?

Charity’s ordeal began with the increasingly dangerous fallout from Mackenzie’s affair and relationship with Chloe Harris. Mack had fathered Chloe’s son Reuben, but eventually chose Charity, leaving Chloe devastated.

Her father Damon, better known as Harry, subsequently became determined to make Mack pay. Harry kidnapped Mack and held him hostage, eventually threatening to kill him. Charity became involved after discovering her husband had been kidnapped and went to rescue him.

During the confrontation, Charity fought with Harry over a gun. The weapon went off during the struggle, killing him. Although Charity had acted while trying to save Mackenzie’s life, the incident had a profound impact on her as she struggled to process what had happened.

The aftermath was particularly difficult because Charity sunk into a fragile mental state, believing that Harry was still alive and ready to get revenge.

Why did Charity stab Mackenzie?

Riddled with guilt over Harry’s death, Charity paid the price with her mental health, which considerably deteriorated. She began experiencing night terrors and acute symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), becoming increasingly paranoid and frightened for her life.

Rather than confronting what she was experiencing, Charity suffered in silence and maintained a collected front for her family. But this eventually led to the events of February 2024.

Charity had been sleeping on the sofa when she experienced another night terror. She had begun keeping a knife close by because of her heightened sense of danger, and when Mack tried to comfort her, she believed she was under attack.

In the midst of her episode, Charity grabbed the knife and stabbed Mack, convinced she was protecting herself from Harry. The consequences were immediate and devastating. Mack was seriously injured and required emergency medical attention, while Charity was left horrified by what she had done.

What happened to Mackenzie after Charity stabbed him?

Mack’s injuries were serious, and he was left in a coma following the attack. For Charity, the situation was almost unbearable. While Moira advocated for her to be charged, Charity’s mental state crumbled even further as she accepted her fate – until she was formally diagnosed with PTSD.

Mackenzie ultimately survived. The couple’s relationship was inevitably placed under enormous strain, but he understood that Charity had not deliberately set out to hurt him. Their marriage survived, hinting at the possibility that they could overcome the repercussions of Dr Todd’s death together.

Charity has once again found herself trying to conceal the truth about a fatal incident. She recently took responsibility for Dr Todd’s fatal fall, while her granddaughter Sarah Sugden attracted suspicion due to her withdrawn disposition.

The pressure has started to affect Charity. In this Friday’s instalment, she was seen frantically cleaning Dr Todd’s blood from the floor at Jacob’s Fold, before Mack intervened and questioned her behaviour.

Charity attempted to dismiss his concerns, but it wasn’t long until Mackenzie put two and two together, figuring out that Charity was covering up Sarah’s responsibility in Dr Todd’s death. This Friday’s trip to the Dales ended with Mackenzie warning Sarah, urging her to remain calm and collected to avoid further suspicion.
