She became convinced that Harry had somehow survived and would eventually return for revenge. Her fear grew into frightening night terrors, paranoia and severe PTSD symptoms. Charity kept her struggles hidden from those around her and attempted to maintain the appearance of being strong.

Eventually, her mental health reached breaking point.

While asleep on the sofa, Charity experienced another terrifying night terror. Because she had become convinced that she was constantly in danger, she had started keeping a knife nearby. When Mackenzie approached her and tried to calm her, Charity mistakenly believed she was being attacked.

In the middle of the episode, she grabbed the knife and stabbed Mackenzie.

Mack suffered serious injuries and was placed into a coma, leaving Charity devastated by what she had done. She was consumed by guilt, while Moira wanted her to face the legal consequences. Charity was eventually diagnosed with PTSD, helping explain the frightening circumstances surrounding the attack.

Mackenzie survived, and despite the enormous strain placed on their marriage, he understood that Charity had never deliberately intended to kill him. The couple ultimately managed to remain together.

Now history appears to be repeating itself in a different and equally dangerous form.

Charity is once again carrying the responsibility for a death she did not cause in order to protect someone she loves. This time, she is determined to shield Sarah from the consequences of Dr Todd’s death.
