‘Project Runway’ has 1 Florida designer. Who was eliminated last week?
Season 22 of “Project Runway” premiered on July 9 with 22 designers, the most contestants ever to be on one season of the show. There are 16 designers left in the competition ahead of tonight’s new episode, and one of them is based in Florida!
On the line for the designers is $200,000, a spread in Elle Magazine, six months of representation from Agentry PR and a mentorship with the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA).
After the July 9 premiere episode, three designers were sent home, and the only Floridian contestant ended the first week in the bottom eight designers. Three more designers were sent home on last week’s episode, but the Florida designer ended up creating one of the top looks of the week.

Yes! “Project Runway” Season 22 premiered on Thursday, July 9, on Freeform, featuring 22 designers. The first two episodes of Season 22 are available to stream on Disney+ and Hulu.
‘Project Runway’ Season 22 designer from Florida still in the competition
There is one designer from Florida on this season of “Project Runway.” Jeffrey Kelly Abess was born and raised in Dearborn, Michigan, but is now based in Orlando, Florida.
“Now based in Florida, he has built a reputation for iconic corseted gowns, avant‑garde fashion and custom costuming,” his Disney biography says. “His work has appeared on celebrities and in standout moments on “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” defined by bold femininity, structure and unforgettable editorial impact.”
In the premiere episode, Kelly said that he competed in pageants and learned to sew by watching his mother, who made wedding dresses.
“I’ve competed in 30 pageants, and I probably have won 28 of them,” Kelly said. “I really couldn’t find a lot of people that I would trust making my stuff, so I started making it for myself….I create sickening fashions that you see all over the world. I make a lot of stuff for the queens on ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’… I’m here to win. The king is here.”
Unfortunately, Kelly landed in the judges’ bottom eight for the first round of looks in the premiere, which ended on a cliffhanger with his fate on the show in the balance. But he was marked safe at the beginning of last week’s episode and went from the bottom to the top, creating one of the judges’ favorite looks of the week.

In the July 9 premiere episode, three designers were eliminated: Andrea Moore, Jennifer Daniels and LRÉ the Artist.
Last week, three more designers were eliminated at the beginning of the episode: Plane Jane, Crone and Nola.
Five contestants were left vulnerable on a cliffhanger. This week, a 12-person jury of their fellow designers will decide to save one of five people who were in the bottom: Pham, Octavius Terry, Dani Bennett, Bao Tranchi and Yangyang Xu. The other four will be sent home tonight.
